Captain's Choice blog: Heading down Lake Huron

When we were in the North Channel we thought about going through the Soo Lock and heading into Lake Superior, but we were 30 miles away by water and weren't really sure if our time frame would allow it. If we had, we would have been able to say that we touched the water of all 5 Great Lakes on this single trip. In the end we decided we need a reason to come back. However, when we left Mackinac Island it was only a few miles out of our way to Lake Michigan. So we headed west and cruised under "The Mighty Mac Bridge" and into Lake Michigan.
Lake Huron welcomed us with calm waters and we traveled to Harrisville on Thursday and then to Port Austin on Friday. We are currently in Port Austin and are staying here 2 days. The town is great- the grocery store is only a block away, the restaurants are good and they have a fabulous farmer's market today. Sunday morning we will head out to Lexington, Michigan.

We found out later in the day that the Port Austin farmer's market is rated #1 in Michigan, we have to agree!

At Port Austin we met some folks from Catawba Island, Ohio

who were also up in the North Channel and they have the same model boat as we do.

We have been traveling down Lake Huron with them for 4 days.

Sunday we left Port Austin and headed to Lexington. Most of the time when we were in the North Channel the winds were something out of the west, which would be great for us traveling in Lake Huron. But now that we are in Lake Huron they switched to the southeast and we are driving right into them again. We have yet to have winds at our back after being gone for 2 months. The last few days of travel has been a little wavy. Lexington is a cute little town, restaurants, grocery store, sand beaches.

Monday's forecast was for rain, wind and thunderstorms later in the day. We left Lexington early and headed to the St. Clair River. The weather cooperated with us and the rain did not start until after we had docked in Algonac, near the north shore of Lake St. Clair. This seems to be a nice marina - restaurant, pool, Jacuzzi, outdoor tiki bar and stores nearby, so we will probably stay here a few days and let the weather system move on. It's always windy after the rains come.
