Cheboygan, Michigan

Cheboygen proved to be a fun town with good food, music, shops and the yearly salmon fishing tournament. As predicted the winds kicked up and we did get some rain Thursday overnight. We rode our bikes to Walmart (2 miles into town) for some groceries Friday. Saturday was the weekly farmer's market in town where we bought some delicious vegetables.

Friday night we enjoyed trying the local brew at Cheboygan Brewery and were treated to music by The Brew House Band. They were fantastic and played everything from oldies to classic rock. We had a delicious dinner at The Boathouse Restaurant.

Saturday was the Salmon fishing tournament, we got up early to watch all the boats head out at 6 a.m. The boats (41 total) had to be back by 2 p.m. and we headed over to the park for the weigh in at 3 p.m. Only a few boats came back with salmon, the majority had lake trout. The largest salmon was almost 20 lbs and the winning boat had a total of 49.5 lbs of fish (weight of 5 fish).

When you enter the Cheboygen River the Coast Guard station is just east of the marina, where the US Coast Guard's heavy breaker Mackinaw is docked. The industrial section is just past that where tankers pull into the harbor to unload fuel oil. As you work your way up river the industrial area ends and the residential section begins with nice homes and boats docked in the river.

There are shops and restaurants just a short walk from the marina. Mark's bike had a breakdown, the shifting mechanism broke and luckily there was a bike shop in town. They were able to fix the bike with used parts, as well as a tune up and lubrication for $20 in about an hours time. Cheboygan was a nice 3 day stay and Sunday its back on the water.
