It's been 6 years since we visited some of the ports on Lake Erie and with extra days in our schedule, since we hardly used any "weather days", we decided to take advantage and make some stops. When we left Buffalo for Lake Superior we headed down Lake Erie in 1 1/2 days, in a hurry to get to Superior and see all it had to offer...heading back was much more leisurely.
We spent several days at Middle Bass Marina and took the ferry over to Put-In-Bay. Only downside to doing that was the last ferry left PIB at 7 pm, so we secured a spot at Park Place on PIB for one night so we could see the band Mustang Sally at the Beer Barrel Saloon. We were so glad we did, we've seen them several times and the energy this group has is amazing.
On Thursday, 7/22, we made our way from PIB to Vermilion. We've wanted to get there the last couple of years but it never worked out. Luckily, there was room at the town docks for Thursday & Friday night. Really cute town, with houses lining a few canals, close to the beach, grocery a little over a mile away, couple of restaurants, but the most impressive thing were their flowers. They are everywhere and so big...would love to know what fertilizer they are using.
Next up was Cleveland, where we stayed for a couple nights at Oasis at North Coast Marina (the old Rock and Dock Marina). This marina is so convenient, grocery store a mile away, breweries near by and Progressive Field just a little over a mile. We took in the Cleveland - Tampa Bay game Sunday with the Cleveland winning 3-2.
From there it was on to Erie, PA Monday where we had hoped to stay for a couple days at the anchorage in Presque Island State Park. The weather forecast wasn't looking too favorable for more than a 1 night stay...so it was on to Buffalo and home on Tuesday.
The weather was decent while we traveled Lake Erie, seems like the rain we had gotten came overnight and the winds have been favorable for our moves. There is a big difference in water temperature, 76 degrees here in Lake Erie compared to those low 50's in Superior. We also noticed more spiders, it must be too cold for them up north and a lot more boats running around here in Lake Erie.
