We still have a few days in Chicago as our daughter Allison will be joining us Monday. On Thursday she will head home and we will head over to the Chicago River and start down the river system. Before we leave Lake Michigan I felt I had to reminisce about our wonderful experience. WE LOVED Lake Michigan and what it has to offer. The quaint towns, beautiful beaches, homes, sand dunes and sunsets that were spectacular...the Michigan side is called "The Sunset Coast". When Lake Michigan is too rough for boating, there are rivers and lakes you can still boat in. We met some wonderful Lake Michigan boaters and we were thrilled that we had great weather and there were only a few days that the winds or rain kept us from moving to a different port.
Some fun facts we learned about Lake Michigan;
- The size of a lake is measured in 2 ways: by volume (amount of water it holds) and by the surface area. Lake Michigan is the 6th largest lake in the world (by both volume and surface area).
- It is the 2nd largest of the Great Lakes by volume and 3rd by surface.
- Lake Michigan covers as many square miles as Maryland, Massachusetts and Delaware combined.
- Widest point 118 miles
- Length 307 miles
- Miles of shoreline 1,600
- Average depth 279' and deepest point 925'
- It is the only great lake located entirely within the US and was discovered by French traders in the 18th century
- Michigan currently has the 2nd largest number of boat registrations, California is #1.
